TMJ Pain Treatment

Temporal-mandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction is a term originally coined to describe a multitude of symptoms, largely pain oriented and related to the head, neck and facial regions. The complexity of the musculo-skeletal system of the head and neck region may contribute to the difficulty in diagnosing and treating TMJ disorders. TMJ evaluation and treatment involves comprehensive assessment of the neck, scalp and jaw to determine deficit and the cause of the dysfunction.

Signs of TMJ dysfunction may include...
  • Locking of the jaw and inability to close
  • Restricted jaw opening
  • Popping and clicking in the jaw
  • Teeth grinding
  • Facial pain/numbness
  • Dizziness and/or disequilibrium
  • Ringing/fullness in ears
  • Hoarseness/difficulty swallowing
  • Headache
The typical patient...
  • Is generally 25 to 40 years old
  • Has seen numerous medical or dental practitioners
  • Has had 3 to 5 years of undiagnosed pain
  • Is female
  • Is actually one of more than 65 million suffering from chronic head and neck pain in this country
Causes…

The causes of TMJ dysfunction are as numerous as the symptoms and include:
  • Trauma to the head or neck
  • Auto accident's 'whiplash' where the jaw flies open; or unremembered fall where the jaw is compressed
  • Stress or anxiety where involved muscles brace and tense
  • Malocclusion
  • Allergies causing upper airway obstruction
  • Congenital malformation
  • Trauma through certain dental procedures or after intubation for surgical procedures
  • Other diseases, for instance, degenerative arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and virus
  • Clenching and bruxism
Referral of patients with symptoms of TMJ dysfunction should be made through Azer Clinic, whose staff will conduct an initial patient evaluation and coordinate additional procedures in confirming your diagnosis.

While every patient's program is individualized to his or her specific need, treatment generally involves manual techniques, relaxation training, and patient education in addition to the use of standard modalities such as ultrasound, electrical muscle stimulation, and heat/cold applications. Each person also receives a home exercise program that addresses their specific needs.
